Located just 30 kilometers northwest of Rome, Lake Bracciano is a serene haven away from the bustling city. Formed within a volcanic crater, this lake is not only one of the largest in Italy but also among the cleanest, thanks to strict environmental regulations that prohibit motorized boats. Surrounded by lush hills and charming medieval towns, Lake Bracciano offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and tranquil relaxation.
The three main towns that line the lake's shores—Bracciano, Anguillara Sabazia, and Trevignano Romano—each offer their own unique charm. Anguillara Sabazia, with its medieval center perched on a promontory jutting into the lake, is particularly picturesque, while Trevignano Romano is known for its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful lakeside promenade. However, it is the town of Bracciano that truly stands out, primarily due to its impressive castle.
Bracciano's historic center is a delightful maze of cobblestone streets, lined with charming cafes, traditional trattorias, and artisanal shops. The town retains much of its medieval character, with stone houses, narrow alleys, and small squares that invite leisurely exploration.
Local cuisine is another highlight of Bracciano. Many restaurants offer regional specialties, including dishes made with fresh lake fish, local cheeses, and homemade pasta. Dining in Bracciano is often accompanied by views of the lake, providing a scenic backdrop to a memorable meal.
Dominating the town of Bracciano is the majestic Odescalchi Castle (Castello Odescalchi), commonly referred to as Bracciano Castle. This fortress is one of the most well-preserved and significant examples of Renaissance military architecture in Italy. Built in the 15th century by the powerful Orsini family, the castle has played host to numerous historical events and figures over the centuries, including kings, popes, and noblemen.
The castle is strategically perched on a hill overlooking Lake Bracciano, offering breathtaking panoramic views that stretch across the water to the surrounding verdant hills. The exterior of the castle, with its imposing walls, towers, and battlements, reflects its defensive purpose, while the interior is a showcase of Renaissance elegance and sophistication.
Inside, visitors can explore a series of grand halls, richly decorated with period furniture, ornate ceilings, and tapestries that reflect the opulence of the era. The castle's armory houses a remarkable collection of Renaissance-era weapons and armor, giving a glimpse into the martial past of the nobility who once resided here.
Some of the notable rooms include the Hall of the Caesars, adorned with portraits of Roman emperors, Hall of the Orsini Frieze, and the Hall of Hercules, where intricate frescoes adorn the walls.

For history enthusiasts, a visit to Ostia Antica is an essential experience. Located just 30 kilometers southwest of Rome, Ostia Antica was once the bustling port city of ancient Rome.
Today, it is celebrated as one of Italy’s most remarkable and well-preserved archaeological sites, often hailed as an excellent alternative to Pompeii. While Pompeii is renowned globally, Ostia Antica offers a similar immersive experience with the advantage of being much closer to Rome, far less crowded, and in exceptional condition.
Ostia Antica was the primary harbor city of ancient Rome and played a crucial role in the empire’s trade and economy. Founded in the 4th century BC, it grew to become a major commercial hub due to its strategic position at the mouth of the Tiber River.
As you explore the expansive ruins, you’ll see how Ostia Antica was a thriving urban center. The site includes a fascinating array of structures, including:
For a truly enriching experience, consider joining RomeCabs’ Ostia Antica & Cerveteri - Ancient World Tour from Rome. This comprehensive day trip includes a visit to Ostia Antica, where you'll explore the remarkable ruins of Rome’s ancient port city.
The tour also takes you to the medieval hamlet of Ceri for a delightful lunch, offering a taste of local charm and cuisine. In the afternoon, you'll journey to Cerveteri to uncover the ancient Etruscan world at the Banditaccia Necropolis, one of the largest and most well-preserved Etruscan burial sites.
With RomeCabs, you’ll travel in comfort in a luxurious, chauffeur-driven vehicle, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable day trip. This tour is perfect for those eager to delve into the depths of Rome’s history and beyond, offering a unique exploration of both Roman and Etruscan civilizations.
Long before the rise of Rome, the Etruscan civilization thrived in what is now central Italy in what used to be known as "Etruria". The Etruscans laid the groundwork for much of the culture, art, and architecture that would later be associated with the Roman Empire. For those intrigued by this enigmatic pre-Roman culture, there are so many amazing places to visit on Etruscan tours.
From Rome, a visit to the ancient Etruscan sites of Tarquinia and Cerveteri is a must. These UNESCO World Heritage-listed locations are not only archaeological treasures but also gateways to understanding the sophisticated and mysterious Etruscans.
Located about 90 kilometers northwest of Rome, Tarquinia was one of the most powerful and influential cities of the Etruscan League. Today, it is renowned for its Necropolis of Monterozzi, an extensive burial site that offers a rare glimpse into the lives and beliefs of the Etruscans.
The Necropolis of Monterozzi is perhaps the most famous of all Etruscan burial sites, boasting over 6,000 tombs, with more than 200 painted with intricate frescoes. These vividly colored paintings are among the most significant examples of Etruscan art, revealing much about the society's values, daily activities, and spiritual beliefs.
One of the most celebrated tombs in Tarquinia is the Tomb of the Leopards, named after the two leopards depicted in the fresco. The frescoes inside depict lively banqueting scenes, with men and women reclining on couches, musicians playing instruments, and dancers in motion. This imagery reflects the Etruscan's love for life, art, and celebration, and their belief in a joyous afterlife.
Another remarkable site is the Tomb of the Jugglers, where the frescoes depict similar scenes of feasting, but with an even greater emphasis on the afterlife's pleasures. The Etruscans believed that the deceased would continue to enjoy the same comforts and luxuries in death as they did in life, and these tombs were designed to be eternal homes for the souls of the departed.
Exploring the Necropolis of Monterozzi offers a profound connection to the Etruscan world, where art was not just decorative but a vital expression of cultural identity and spirituality.
Just a short drive from Tarquinia, the ancient city of Cerveteri was another major center of Etruscan civilization. Its Necropolis of Banditaccia is one of the largest and most impressive burial sites from the ancient Mediterranean world, offering a unique insight into Etruscan funerary practices and their vision of the afterlife.
Spanning over 400 hectares, the Banditaccia Necropolis is an extraordinary archaeological site, where visitors can explore hundreds of tombs that date back to the 9th century BC. Unlike the underground tombs of Tarquinia, many of Cerveteri’s tombs are built into large mounds or "tumuli", resembling small houses with rooms, corridors, and even beds and furniture carved from the rock.
The layout of these tombs reflects the Etruscans' concept of the afterlife as a continuation of earthly existence. Each tomb was designed as a representation of the deceased's home, complete with various rooms, and included personal items that the dead might need in the next world.
One of the most notable tombs in Cerveteri is the Tomb of the Reliefs, which dates to the 4th century BC. This tomb is particularly famous for its detailed reliefs carved into the walls, depicting household items, weapons, and symbols of the afterlife. The realism and detail in these carvings provide an unparalleled view of Etruscan domestic life and their beliefs about death and the afterlife.
As you wander through the streets of this "city of the dead", it becomes clear that the Etruscans viewed death not as an end, but as a transition to another form of existence. The Necropolis of Banditaccia is a testament to their complex spiritual beliefs and their mastery of architecture and art.

Just 30 kilometers east of Rome, the historic town of Tivoli offers an enchanting escape into Italy's past, where ancient Roman grandeur and Renaissance elegance converge. A day trip to Tivoli is an opportunity to explore two of Italy’s most remarkable historical sites: Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este. Together, these sites offer a perfect blend of architectural brilliance, artistic beauty, and serene landscapes, making Tivoli an ideal destination for history buffs, architecture enthusiasts, and garden lovers alike.
Hadrian's Villa, or Villa Adriana, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most extraordinary examples of Roman architecture and engineering. Built in the 2nd century AD as a retreat for Emperor Hadrian, this sprawling complex covers over 250 acres and was designed to reflect the emperor's admiration for Greek, Egyptian, and Roman cultures. The villa was more than just a residence; it was a self-contained city, complete with palaces, libraries, theaters, baths, temples, and extensive gardens.
As you wander through the ruins, you’ll discover the wonders of Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli. Not to be missed is the Maritime Theatre, an island villa surrounded by a moat, where Hadrian is believed to have sought solitude. The Canopus, a large reflecting pool flanked by statues and columns, evokes the grandeur of Egyptian and Greek architecture, while the Pecile, a massive garden with a central pool, showcases the Romans' mastery of landscape design.
Exploring Hadrian's Villa offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of one of Rome's most cultured and innovative emperors. The ruins, though weathered by time, still evoke the luxury and splendor that once defined this imperial retreat.
In contrast to the ancient ruins of Hadrian's Villa, Villa d'Este is a dazzling display of Renaissance art and garden design. Built in the 16th century by Cardinal Ippolito d'Este, this magnificent villa is celebrated for its elaborate gardens, which are among the most beautiful in Italy.
The gardens of Villa d'Este are a true masterpiece, featuring a series of terraces adorned with lush greenery, sculptures, and, most famously, fountains. The Fountain of Neptune, with its dramatic jets of water, and the Hundred Fountains, a long avenue of spouting waterworks, are just two of the many spectacular water features that make this garden a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The villa itself, with its richly decorated halls and frescoed ceilings, offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the Renaissance elite. As you stroll through the gardens, serenaded by the sound of flowing water and surrounded by the scent of flowers, you’ll understand why Villa d'Este is considered one of the finest examples of Renaissance garden design in the world.
A visit to Tivoli offers a perfect blend of ancient history and Renaissance elegance, making it an ideal day trip from Rome. RomeCabs offers a luxurious and convenient way to experience these extraordinary sites with their Tivoli Villas and Gardens Tour from Rome and Post Cruise Tour from Civitavecchia to Tivoli.
On this private Tivoli tour from Rome, you’ll be chauffeured in comfort from Rome to the historic town of Tivoli, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore both Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este at your own pace.
Your journey begins at Hadrian's Villa, where you’ll wander through the expansive ruins and imagine the splendor of this once-great imperial retreat. After lunch in the town of Tivoli, you’ll visit Villa d'Este, where the stunning gardens and fountains will transport you to the height of the Renaissance.
Whether you’re a history lover, an art enthusiast, or simply someone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Rome for a day, RomeCabs’ Tivoli tour offers an unforgettable experience.

Bagno Vignoni is a small, unique village known for its ancient thermal waters. Unlike any other village in Tuscany, its main square, Piazza delle Sorgenti, is dominated by a large thermal pool that has been in use since Roman times. The steaming waters of this pool create a mystical atmosphere, especially in the cooler months when the surrounding air is crisp.
The village has long been a place of rest and rejuvenation, attracting travelers seeking the healing properties of its waters. Today, visitors can still relax in the thermal baths of nearby spas, continuing a tradition that dates back thousands of years. Bagno Vignoni is also surrounded by beautiful walking trails, offering panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside.
San Quirico d'Orcia is a charming medieval town that boasts a rich history and well-preserved architecture. The town’s centerpiece is the Collegiate Church of San Quirico e Giulitta, a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture with a facade adorned with intricate carvings and a beautiful rose window.
Adjacent to the church is the Horti Leonini, a formal Italian garden created in the 16th century. These gardens are a peaceful retreat, with perfectly manicured hedges and stunning views of the surrounding countryside. San Quirico’s winding streets and historic buildings make it an ideal place for a leisurely stroll, where every corner reveals a new glimpse into the town’s storied past.
Monticchiello is a tiny, picturesque village perched on a hilltop, offering some of the most stunning views in the Val d’Orcia. This quaint village is a perfect example of a traditional Tuscan hill town, with its narrow, winding streets, stone houses, and ancient walls. The village is also renowned for its Teatro Povero di Monticchiello, a community theater where locals perform plays that reflect the town’s history and culture.
Walking through Monticchiello feels like stepping back in time, and the views from the village’s vantage points are nothing short of breathtaking. It’s a place where you can slow down, take in the scenery, and experience the timeless charm of rural Tuscany.
Montalcino is a delightful Tuscan hilltop town. Surrounded by vineyards, Montalcino is also a must-visit for wine lovers. The town itself is dominated by the Fortezza di Montalcino, a 14th-century fortress that offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Within its walls, you’ll find wine shops offering tastings of the local Brunello, as well as other fine Tuscan wines.
Montalcino’s historic center is a delight to explore, with its medieval streets, charming squares, and inviting enotecas where you can sample and purchase the region’s famed wines. The town’s rich viticultural heritage and scenic beauty make it an essential stop on any Tuscan itinerary.

Countryside Splendor with RomeCabs was great!
We were picked up at our Rome hotel exactly on time in a clean and comfortable van. Our driver was wonderful as he took us through the Roman countryside to see Lake Bracciano and Castello Orsini-Odescalchi. Then a wonderful lunch at a charming restaurant in Ceri and then off to the Necropolis in Cerveteri before being dropped off perfectly on time at our cruise port to board our cruise. We were able to turn an otherwise direct transfer from Rome to Civitavecchia into an adventure thanks to RomeCabs. It was truly "Countryside Splendor"!

Beautiful Day in Beautiful Tuscany
Our family of 8 took the Nectar of the Gods Tour to Montepulciano and Montalcino with a stop at the Abby and Fanti Winery and had a beautiful day. Our driver, Michele was fantastic! He was very professional and spoke very clear English. He was fun and knowledgeable about the area! Our wine tasting went an hour later than scheduled and he was very patient and did not rush us at all! We would highly recommend taking this tour and requesting Michele as a driver!
